harnessing the power of the day

Why You Should Harness the Power of the Day

May 8, 2024, 09:19 AM by Sharon Tinkler

Every day provides a new opportunity to shape our futures, a principle we've long cherished here at BodySlims. It's what we do right today, the decisions we make in the present, that counts and paves the way for our tomorrow.

So, we invite you to explore the transformative power of fully embracing each day. Because by doing so, you can unlock a host of benefits and steer your life towards increased productivity, improved mental clarity, and, especially, significant levels of weight loss. Let's jump into the essence of harnessing the power of the day and show you how you can make each day the very best it can be…

First, Some Words from Gerard, BodySlims Weight Whisperer, About Harnessing the Power of the Day

"The greatest gift I ever received was delivered to me right at the start of my own recovery from alcoholism in the back office of a furniture shop in Dun Laoghaire. I was asked “Could I stay from the drink (and then the magic words) JUST FOR TODAY? I honestly believe if any longer time frame had been used I wouldn’t be here nearly 38 years later. But one day? Just one day, no commitment about tomorrow, or next weekend, or next month, yeah, I can do one day. And, the magic, of course, is that when tomorrow comes, it’s today again. That’s why it’s called your present, it’s a gift you get on a daily basis which if you learn to harness it moves mountains for you."

The Benefits of Embracing the Power of the Day

Before we discuss the why and how of the power of the day, let’s explain some of its benefits:

Maximise Your Productivity

Firstly, tapping into the day's potential can significantly boost your ability to accomplish your tasks efficiently and effectively. This requires a blend of discipline, prioritisation, and proactivity so you can achieve more and ultimately foster personal growth and notable accomplishments.

Improve Your Mental Clarity

Practising mindfulness, positive thinking, and optimism can help improve both your mental and emotional well-being. By focusing on the present moment and acknowledging thoughts and feelings without judgment, we can create a more attentive and compassionate relationship with ourselves. This can then lead to better concentration, decision-making abilities, and empathy towards others.

Reduce Your Stress

Who doesn’t want less stress in their lives? Alongside improved mental clarity, your stress levels can actually benefit from embracing the power of the day. This is because, by prioritising daily joys and accomplishments, not only do you gain a sense of fulfilment, but, more importantly, you grasp stronger control over your life. When you focus on the positive aspects and achievements of each day, no matter how small, you create a buffer against those stressors that inevitably arise, letting you tackle challenges with more resilience and confidence.

Weight Loss

Now, we would say that one of the biggest benefits you can see from embracing the power of the day is weight loss, especially when done with the help of the BodySlims programme. Why? Because when you embrace today, you set the stage for tomorrow.

Let’s take the daily activities from the programme as an example. Once you get up and out, do your hour walk,  keep to your personal calorie allowance and don’t slip up, you have done everything right and done everything you can do that day to be a better you. And, you could be confronted with challenges, maybe something simple like bad weather or you’re really not feeling good about yourself. But once you do it, we promise you’ll feel better, you’ll come through it, you’ll begin to lose weight, and you won’t ever regret giving the day your all.

And you may not believe something as simple as changing your outlook each day can be truly effective, but we’ve seen hundreds of success stories that prove otherwise!

How You Can Get the Day Right

As we’ve said, getting your day right can be a challenge, and it can be difficult to find the motivation. However, we have some tips to help you:

1. Externalise Your Thoughts

Externalising your thoughts lets you become aware of your own roadblocks.  Ask yourself, “What's the most I can do today?”,  “ What more can I do today?” and “What more can I demand from myself?” The best way to do that is to take note of them, literally outside yourself (we recommend a journal), so you know, and actually see “I was a quitter” or  “I started things, and I quit”.

Writing them down on paper allows you to acknowledge that “I see what I'm doing; this is my sort of behaviour. This is what I need to fix.” It acts as a trigger for you to see where you are going wrong, giving you a starting point for correcting it.

2. Manage Your Expectations

Now, the beauty of embracing the power of the day is that it can really help manage yourself and your expectations. Most people can become devastated about their progress, hoping for weight loss but it not being there on a particular day. The power of the day teaches you that there are things in life people are going to be devastated about, but weight loss not being there shouldn't be one of them.

We always say that weight loss is not a straight line; You could be down five pounds one week, up three pounds the next. Don’t expect consistent results because one big thing that affects the number on the scales on a day-to-day basis is hydration. You are in different states of hydration at different times, so don’t be put off if the number goes up, or doesn’t go down enough. Keep showing up for yourself every day and pick one day a week to weigh yourself (we like Weigh-in Wednesdays!).

3. Be Positive and Grateful

A follow-up to externalising our thoughts is trying to be positive and grateful each day. Now, we know people can struggle with this, struggle with changing those chemicals in our brains that make us negative and lack confidence in ourselves. What we’ve found is that the fastest way to change these chemicals and how our brain processes things is to move. Motion is the key to changing emotion naturally. So, you're going to start walking, and as soon as you do, as soon as you change the scene, you're going to feel differently. Once you get back from your walk today, you’ll feel that small rush; that’s the mental clarity beginning to creep in. And what this really is is the changing of our brain chemicals, and so by doing this every day, you’ll slowly start to feel more positive and grateful,  actually wanting to get out and move again.

4. Acknowledge the Habit Formation Process

Next, to embrace the power of the day, we must acknowledge how habits are formed and how it is the breaking of bad habits that will get us to where we dream of being.

We are all creatures of habit. We are all habitual, every single one of us, and we are basically just a summation of our habits. First, we form the habit, and then the habit forms us. In other words, we wear our habits. Whatever you do, you tend to do every single day, and you will not give it a moment's thought; you just go on autopilot, and you do it.  For example, the habit that got you here today is unhealthy eating. Your weight gain didn’t happen overnight, it was something you decided to do every. single. day.

So, doesn't it make sense that if you want to change your result, your life, your size, your shape, you need to change how you act because you are the result of how you act?

People always say, “I’m going to do this.. I’m going to do that..” but never follow through because they never get their day right. Don’t be one of those people. Remember what we say; we are what we repeatedly do, excellence therefore is not an act but a habit. So to be excellent, we have to be excellent each and every day.

5. Do the Best You Can

We want you to come to the end of your day and be able to say to yourself, “I did everything I could today.”

Imagine this: you’re playing a match, and it finishes with a draw result. What are you saying to yourself? Are you, your coaches, or your teammates saying you “could have done more ”? Or are they saying, ‘“Look, you did everything you could, you did your best, you were great, you were fantastic to get the draw, it was the right result’? Doing your best is totally different to coming off the field and knowing you didn't do your best. This is where your power is because, bringing it back to weight loss, you're not synced to lose weight every seven days, and you have to accept whatever your own weight loss line is, because it is not straight.

With this in mind, if you’re on the pitch, you can affect the game, and it's all predicated on you doing everything right one day at a time; that’s all you can do. But you have to be prepared to put in the work and do everything to the best of your ability. If you've got it right, then the result you got is the best result you could have gotten; you couldn't have done any better, and you can then go write in your journal,  “I gave my best. I did my best this week”.

Seize the Power of the Day with the BodySlims Programme!

With BodySlims, people are often shocked when we tell them they are powerless over the weight but have the ultimate power of their day. How did they get out of shape? Day after day doing the wrong thing, maybe eating the wrong things or even eating the right things, but in too large a quantity. Not spectacularly wrong, just continuously. This was the process we used to get out of shape and it’s the exact same process we’re going to use to get back in shape. One day at a time. Just today, we get today right and when tomorrow comes, it’s today again, and we get that right. As previously, we put a number of wrong days back to back and saw the result, now as we start to put good days back to back and miracles start to happen!

So just think about it: if you can manage to do it one day, you can do it for the rest of your life. The control you have is in getting your day right. Which day? Today. Remember, stay on the pitch, stay in the game. Don’t worry about tomorrow, and sign up for our programme today!
